5 random ways I like Christmas (kind of)

I don’t particularly like Christmas. Well I do, I just get so sick of the long-winded run-up to it that I feel it’s lost its magic but I’ve now discovered my own random reasons for enjoying it:

– Alcohol (all day)

From the moment you wake up alcohol can touch your lips without thinking you have a problem.  Your head can be swimming before the first present is given out and no one minds though you might want to eat a few more potatoes to soak it up enough for the evening drinks.  You need to pace yourself don’t forget 😉

Mmmm drink

– Cheesy Movies

No, I’m not talking about the crap they play on the dedicated Christmas TV channels which literally want to make me vomit, I’m talking about the classics: Home Alone, Muppet Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street, Elf, Santa Claus and anything with Wallace and Gromit in (if you want a classy British Christmas day that is).

– Advent Calendars

Now, I don’t celebrate the ‘advent’ part of Christmas (in case you don’t know/celebrate it, ‘advent’ is the three weeks leading up to the big day – something about waiting for Jesus *yawn* – they’ll be waiting a long time) but I like the calendar part of advent because it means you get a chocolate every day!!  And the best bit is, because it’s a Christmas tradition, you don’t have to justify it!  Granted, as a girl, I don’t require any justification to eat chocolate but having an excuse makes it taste so much better, especially for 24 days!

-Roast Dinner

I don’t care about the presents, the dinner is definitely the best bit of the whole day.  Vegetables, succulent meat (get your minds out of the gutter thank you – we’re talking about the bird variety), sage and onion stuffing, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding and mint sauce all swimming in gravy.  Mmm I’m salivating just writing this *I’ll be right back – kitchen is calling me*

– Cold Weather

That might sound strange but don’t you just love the idea of snuggling up on the sofa with a blanket or hot water bottle with a cup of hot chocolate in your hands (or alcohol – that works just as well…so I’m told 😉 ). Not only that but you get to eat the advent chocolates AND watch the cheesy movies I told you about – so what’s not to love about it (as long as you’re not out in it of course)?!

How about you?  What’s your favourite, random, reason you like Christmas?

  1. Love this – I’m a massive xmas fan and I’m one of those annoying people that goes all out and gets excited in November.
That christmas dinner looks absolutely amazing. Cannot wait for this!
I’d like to add another reason to like xmas – spending time with your family. I mean properly spending time with them. Shopping with them and watching films with them and generally chilling out together and remembering why they’re all so brilliant.

  2. Monica – oooh family yes that’s a good one! Quality time with them and not just rushed conversations is a great part of Christmas though you might need the aforementioned alcohol to cope after a while lol 😉

  3. Jen

The dinner is defo one of the best bits, I starve myself for about 3 days before it just so I can fit more in.. xx

  4. Runaway Brit

The dinner is incredible but picking on all the leftovers for the next 3 days is pretty fab too. I’m a big fan of Chocolate Christmas tree decorations. Who wouldn’t want a glittery tree that hands out free chocolate??!!

  5. I normally get grumpy at the massively long build-up too, but this year has actually been pretty fun – I live with two teachers now, and we actually have a lot of end-of-term feeling in our house right now, which is nice!

I like most things about Christmas – the only thing I really don’t like is the physical act of travelling home on many, many trains. And Christmas cake.

  6. Jen – I can just imagine you being like Oliver Twist – please mum I want LOTs more 🙂 x

  7. Runaway – I LOVE the leftovers and all the party food in the days after Christmas. On the christmas chcolate decorations are awesome! Though one year I decorated them with so many that by the time I’d eaten them there wasn’t much decoration left haha 😀

  8. Smallgirl – haha I bet you all feel like you’re coming to the end of a marathon don’t you?! Sounds like a few drinks are in order! Travelling definitely sucks at Christmas, if you drive you can’t drink but if the weather is bad travelling on public transport can be murder as well because it’s so busy and slow – ugh!

  9. Yes!!!! You know I particularly agree with number one! My family has a killer homemade egg nog recipe that my nana adds a ridiculous amount of liquor to. Christmas is definitely more enjoyable when the family is wasted.

  10. Elle – I’l be round your house for the egg nog right now if I could! Yummy! And you’re TOTALLY RIGHT – Christmas is definitely more enjoyable when they family is waste…girl after my own heart =)

  11. In my business, the only thing I like about Christmas is that it ends. Bah Humbug! 🙂

  12. Erik – I’m not even IN business and I look forward to Boxing Day when it’s over and done with. Cheers to Bah Humbug 😀

  13. For me it’s definitely the movies and the dinner. And being warm inside while it’s freezing outside… awh.

Thanks for creating a little early christmas spirit!

  14. Annie – It’s going to be VERY weird this year with Christmas being in Australia; I might have to wear a jumper just to feel like I’m back in the UK 😉
